it was first issued in September 1916 with an official certificate of entitlement
invariably as well these medals were erased (probably returned medals) and issued to the nurses
The GV version bears the cypher of King George V and was awarded during his reign
though modern research suggests that Chinese guns may have been used at various times
A total of 24 four clasps were issued to this medal and the maximum number of clasps know to one medal is seven

To date approximately 2000 medals have been awarded and 27 second award bars. Although the awards have been split fairly evenly across the Military and Civilians it is perhaps today more often awarded to Military Personnel, particularly Bomb Disposal, EOD work as well as intelligence work by special forces.
